Now that she has seen up close the highest calibre of high school-age volleyball in this country, Georgetown South’s Chelsea Jensen can’t wait to do it all again next year.
The 17-year-old played the outside hitter and libero positions for Ontario’s second entry at the under-18 girls’ National Team Challenge Cup tournament recently in Calgary, in which they placed sixth out of 12 teams, going 4-1 in the preliminary round despite being one of the younger teams in the draw.
Jensen endured a lengthy tryout process in order to make the Ontario-17 team for the NTCC tourney, which was won by the Ontario under-18 girls.
“It was more of a learning experience for us and hopefully next year when we’re a year older we’ll be able to capitalize on that,” she said.
If Jensen does make the roster for Team Ontario again in the coming months she’ll also have the opportunity to play in the 2009 Canada Summer Games in P.E.I.
Georgetown District High School’s senior athlete of the year for 2007-08, Jensen has been fine-tuning her 5-foot-10 frame at Sport Specific Training in Burlington to build strength in order to compete at an elite level.
She’s also been playing this summer on the Ontario Volleyball Association’s 2008 Beach Tour with partner Leah Urquhart, her teammate on the Mississauga Pakmen club side. They placed 15th at the recent provincial championships in Cobourg, while Limehouse residents Ashley Nixon and Gabby Kosziwka finished fifth in the under-18 Tier I division.
