Golf roundup Greenwell’s strong start goes for naught at men’s amateur

Georgetown’s Robbie Greenwell had another promising start to a big tournament as he ended up in a tie for 54th at the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s Men’s Amateur Championship in Lethbridge, Alta. last week.
The 22-year-old University of Memphis student fired an eagle and four birdies in his opening round, which also included a quadruple bogey seven on the 17th hole. Greenwell recorded rounds of 73-74-72-74 to finish at nine over par. Cam Burke of New Hamburg won the tourney at -10.
Gavin Aldridge of Georgetown just missed out on being one of the 11 players who made the field after a qualifying round was held on Sunday in Lethbridge, shooting a two-over-par 73 to miss the cut by two strokes.

Samantha Spencer of Georgetown South placed first in the open girls’ division at the Canadian Junior Golf Association Kaneff Junior Series event at the Lionhead Golf & Country Club with a round of 87, six shots better than the runner-up.
Fellow North Halton Golf & Country Club member Adam Putnam tied for fourth after an 80 in the boys’ 14-16 tournament at Lionhead, with Georgetown’s Andrew Moffat finished 21st in that age category. Ryan Moffatt turned in a 109 through 18 holes in the 13 & under division.
Spencer, 12, also placed third in this week’s Canadian Optimist Junior Golf Championships at the Ingersoll Golf & Country Club after carding 90-89 over 36 holes in the girls’ 14 & under age group. She finished fourth at the GAO Bantam Clublink Tour’s visit to the Heron Point Golf Links in Ancaster with an 88.

Eight-year-old Nicklaus Naumovski of Halton Hills recorded a nine-hole score of 38 to place in a tie for second, two shots off the lead in the boys’ 8 & under division at the CJGA Junior Linkster Series Tour stop at the Streetsville Glen Golf Club. Georgetown’s Callum Biehn, 11, ended up in a tie for eighth in the boys’ 11-12 age category with a +19 score of 87, 11 strokes back of the leader.
At the CJGA Kaneff Junior Series event held Monday at the Royal Ontario Golf Course in Hornby, local resident Adam Salisbury, 17, shot a 10-over-par 82 to finish fourth, five shots behind the winner in the boys’ 17-19 age group.

Ballinafad’s Marcus Rees turned in an eighth-place result in the CJGA’s Adams Golf Junior Classic at Royal Woodbine on Tuesday with 79-84, 14 shots behind the winner.
The 16-year-old Rees was also on an Eagle Ridge Golf Club team that placed second at the ClubLink Interclub Junior Championships, involving several clubs from Ontario and Quebec at the Station Creek Golf Club in Aurora. Also on the local side were juniors Brendan Uberig, Andrew Barker and assistant pro Marc Doyle.
In the one-round two-person best-ball format, the Eagle Ridge contingent combined for a 21-under-par score, just one shot back of the winners.

Twelve-year-old Joel Albany of Georgetown had rounds of 87 and 84 to finish in a tie for 46th out of 70 entrants at the recent Golf Association of Ontario’s bantam (14 yrs. & under) boys’ championships at the Puslinch Lake Golf Club in Cambridge.
