I hope you are enjoying your summer. For the most part, this has been a wet one. It is supposed to be a drier August— we can only hope.
School kids are still out, so motorists, be on your guard. Parents, encourage your kids to be active as child obesity is on the rise at an alarming rate, as is diabetes. Limit your kids’ time on those darn computers!

Remember, if you go hiking in the woods, dress accordingly. There are ticks in this area that may transmit Lyme disease. Local businessman and Lyme disease awareness advocate, Keith Poulous, is living proof these nasty ticks exist here.

Fairy Lake, located in Prospect Park in Acton, is a man-made lake that was deeded to the Town a dozen years ago. Almost every day in the early morning I take a walk through the park with my pooch. This time of year, you can see something new every day— anything from the early morning mist to large fish jumping out of the water, snapping turtles, Canada geese, etc., and the lake looks spectacular. Unfortunately, as the scorching summer days roll around, the lake may not look as healthy. The shoreline recedes and weeds clog up certain areas. Presently, the Town is engaged in a Fairy Lake water quality study. This study will have many goals, including:
• Development of a long-term strategy to improve water quality
• Weed management
• Appropriate controls for water fowl
• Communications plan to improve public awareness and promoting good stewardship
We look forward to seeing the study’s results.

The new lighted soccer pitch in Acton is now officially open thanks to the $100,000 donation from the Acton Soccer Association.

Work is also under way on constructing a new baseball diamond in the Trafalgar Sports Park. Again, kudos go out to the Georgetown Slo-Pitch League for their generous donation of $100,000 which helped bring this capital project forward.

Congratulations to Goebelle McAdam Alexander on its 40th anniversary June 23, and to Anthea Hoare, the 2008 Citizen of the Year for Glen Williams. Thank you Anthea for your tireless hours of volunteer work.

Speaking of the Glen, thank you to all of the volunteers who gave the Town of Halton Hills another successful Canada Day celebration. Also to the Acton BIA which provided concerts in Prospect Park, followed by a spectacular fireworks display thanks to the Acton Firefighters Association.
