Don’t forget what made town great— reader

Dear editor,
As a life-long resident of this beautiful town, I have had the pleasure of growing up in a small community.
A community where you were always friends with your neighbour, so much so you invited them over for Christmas dinner. A community where when you walked down the sidewalk, you smiled at the person walking past you. A community where you opened the door for others, and helped the elderly with their bags. I remember everything about our small town charm. So to the residents of this town I ask you: What has happened to us?
Are we destined to become one of those big impersonal cities where you don’t even know your neighbour’s name? Where one someone smiles at you and you ask: what are you looking at?
To the good people of this town, I beg you: please don’t forget what it means to live in such a beautiful and kind community. Remember who you are, and where you came from. Remember a good deed never goes unnoticed and a kind word never goes unheard. Please remember this is not just a place to live, this is your home. This is all of our homes. Let’s not let it slip through our fingers.
So the next time you are out, smile at the person next to you. Or open the door for someone whose hands might be full. Let’s all try to make this town a greater place to live.
