Teens have been educated to ‘minimize’ abortion

Dear editor,
It was disturbing to discover a billboard offering support to post-abortive women had been vandalized recently in Georgetown.
Before the offensive graffiti was added, the ad pictured a sad woman accompanied by the message “Abortion Hurts. You don’t have to suffer alone,” with contact information offering help. At our agency, we know these stories first-hand, but it seems even acknowledging abortion can have negative consequences is contentious.
I would not rush to accuse ardent pro-choicers as being complicit as the type of vandalism suggests the work of teenagers. I do, however believe that our billboard was targeted because teens have been educated to minimize the issue as well as the consequences and harm done to women. Through the shaping of public attitudes for years, any opposition to the pro-abortion message— no matter how innocuous— is viewed as offensive.
Such actions track with direct efforts to censor the pro-life message. An ad showing a pregnant woman with an ultrasound image of an unborn child superimposed over the woman’s stomach asking if Canada allowing unrestricted abortion is going too far was barred from many communities including Hamilton and our plans for Oakville bus shelters. It is now common to have campus pro-life displays vandalized, the blocking of debates on abortion, and administration not allowing pro-life clubs to operate on many university campuses. Apparently, without irony, a quote from York University for their decision to reject the club was because of their anti-choice views.
Such incidents make clear why the educational efforts of Halton Pro-life are so necessary.
